Meaning of the Idiom
ji e ru chou(hate evil as one’s enemy)
During the Western Jin Dynasty, most of the officials were from nobles, and they enjoyed many privileges and lived a very luxurious life. During the reign of Emperor Hui, an official named Fu Xian was a decent man and dared to speak out.
One year, there was a famine in various places, many people were homeless, and countless people died of starvation and freezing. Fu Xian immediately reported to Emperor Hui that the people had no food to eat, but Emperor Hui asked incomprehensibly, “Then why don’t they eat meat porridge?” Fu Xian heard this, not knowing whether to laugh or cry, so he detailed the situation of the people to Emperor Hui. When Emperor Hui asked what advice he had, Fu Xian said directly: “Officials are excessively extravagant. Their daily meals cost as much as 10,000 yuan, but the people have no food to survive. The government should punish these wasteful officials.”
After hearing this, Emperor Hui felt that it was very reasonable, and finally made up his mind to dismiss some officials.
Since then, officials have restrained. Therefore, people say that Fu Xian is a serious official and hates evil.
